Description

The hartebeest is an African antelope from the group of cow antelopes that appears relatively clumsy. The English name, which is also occasionally used in German, comes from Afrikaans and means something like "tough animal". The South African Boers called the antelope this because it often took several shots to kill it when hunting. To better distinguish it from other species of the cow antelope subfamily, it is sometimes referred to as the "true" cow antelope or red cow antelope.
