Description

This molar comes from a cave bear ( Ursus spelaeus ), which evolved from the Denningen bear around 500,000 years ago. The tooth, found in Styria, Austria, dates to the Pleistocene and is a testament to this impressive species that lived exclusively in Europe.

During its evolution, the cave bear developed from an omnivore to a herbivore. Standing upright, it reached a height of over 3.5 meters and a weight of between 600 and 1200 kg. The species became extinct around 27,800 years ago, probably due to a lack of food during the long ice ages.
