Real Cave Bear Rib
Item Description
This rib comes from a cave bear (Ursus spelaeus), which evolved from the Deninger bear around 500,000 years ago. The rib, found in Styria, Austria, is dated and is a testament to this impressive species that lived exclusively in Europe.
During its evolution, the cave bear developed from an omnivore to an herbivore. Standing upright, it reached a height of over 3.5 meters and a weight between 600 and 1200 kg. The species died out about 27,800 years ago, probably due to food shortages during the long Ice Age periods.
