Real Cave Bear Rib
Description
This rib comes from a cave bear ( Ursus spelaeus ), which evolved from the Denningen bear approximately 500,000 years ago. The rib, found in Styria, Austria, is dated and testifies to this impressive species that lived exclusively in Europe.
During its evolution, the cave bear evolved from an omnivore to a herbivore. Standing upright, it reached a height of over 3.5 meters and a weight between 600 and 1200 kg. The species became extinct about 27,800 years ago, presumably due to food shortages during the long ice ages.
