The black wolf is a rare color variant of the gray wolf ( Canis lupus ). Its dark fur is the result of a genetic mutation that presumably entered the wild population through crossbreeding with domestic dogs. Black wolves appear mysterious and majestic. In many cultures, they symbolize strength, independence, and the unknown—sometimes feared, often admired. Today, they fascinate not only biologists but also people who feel a connection to mythology, nature, and the wilderness.
Gray wolves are highly social animals that live in packs. These packs typically consist of five to nine members who work closely together and have a clear hierarchy.
