The plains zebra is the most widespread zebra species in Africa and is known for its distinctive black and white stripes, which vary considerably depending on the subspecies and individual. They are highly social animals and live in stable family groups consisting of a stallion, several mares, and their foals. The plains zebra is robust, hardy, and perfectly adapted to life in dry savannas. As strict herbivores, they feed primarily on grasses. Despite their wide distribution, some subspecies are threatened by habitat loss and hunting pressure.
