Its striking bicolouration, deep black at the front and snow white at the back, as well as its long, curved horns, are typical. It is perfectly adapted to the harsh alpine climate and is traditionally used for milk and meat production as well as landscape maintenance.

Today, it is considered a symbol of the cultural heritage of the Swiss mountain regions and is preserved and promoted through various breeding programmes.
