Alouatta caraya |
Real Howler Skull
Description
The black howler monkey (Alouatta caraya) is native to the rainforests of South America and is known for its distinctive, deep call that can be heard up to 3 kilometers away. This monkey lives in large groups and feeds mainly on leaves, fruit and flowers. The black howler monkey's hyoid bone is particularly fascinating. This bone is exceptionally large and strongly developed. This special development enables the monkey to produce its distinctive call. The hyoid bone is adapted in such a way that it acts as a resonance body, which amplifies the powerful and piercing sound. This adaptation is particularly pronounced in male monkeys, who often defend their territory loudly.
