The Black Howler Monkey (Alouatta caraya) is native to the rainforests of South America and is known for its distinctive, deep call, which can be heard up to 3 kilometers away. This monkey lives in large groups and feeds mainly on leaves, fruits, and flowers. Particularly fascinating is the hyoid bone of the Black Howler Monkey. This bone is exceptionally large and well-developed in this species. This special development allows the monkey to produce its distinctive call. The hyoid bone is adapted to function as a resonance chamber, which amplifies the powerful and penetrating sound. This adaptation is particularly pronounced in male monkeys, who often loudly defend their territory.
