Pantherophis guttatus |
Real snake skull (non-toxic)
Description
Over 2,100 snake species are known worldwide. Of these, only about 10% are venomous, and even fewer pose a threat to humans. Snakes have evolved into highly specialized predators and inhabit virtually every habitat on Earth.
Most non-venomous snakes locate their prey using their keen sense of smell and taste, extending their forked tongue, and sniffing out odorous particles from the air. Many kill their prey by coiling and suffocating before swallowing it whole. Their flexible jaw joint allows them to swallow even prey wider than their own heads.
