Real grey seal skull
Item Description
The grey seal is the largest seal species in the North Atlantic and belongs to the family of seals. It is easily recognizable by its long, conical head with widely spaced nostrils, hence its name. Males can grow to over 2.5 meters long and weigh up to 300 kilograms, while females remain significantly smaller.
Grey seals prefer cool coastal waters, on sandbanks, rocky islands, or in dune landscapes. In Europe, they are found primarily in the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, the Atlantic around Great Britain, and on the Brittany coast. Their diet consists mainly of fish, squid, and occasionally crustaceans. In Latvia, limited hunting of seals has been permitted since 2024 to limit significant damage to fish stocks in coastal fisheries.
