Their sure-footedness and frugality make them ideal for the steep, barren slopes of the mountains. For centuries, they have provided milk, meat, leather, and wool, contributing significantly to Alpine self-sufficiency and culture.

A special feature are their horns: they grow throughout their lives, are individually shaped, and reflect age, rank, and sometimes even the breed. The impressive twisted horns of bucks, such as those of the Valais Blackneck goat, are not only functional for defence but also a symbol of strength and primitiveness.
