Real Giraffe Skull

The giraffe is the tallest living land animal on Earth, reaching impressive heights of up to 5.79 meters. As a symbol of the African savanna, it has perfectly adapted to life with its long neck and remarkable tongue. The giraffe primarily feeds on leaves that are inaccessible to other herbivores, using its agile, up to 50 cm long tongue to carefully pluck leaves from between the sharp thorns of trees.

Another fascinating feature of the giraffe is its ossicones – knob-like, skin and hair-covered bony outgrowths on its head that grow steadily throughout its life and are particularly pronounced in male animals.

In Switzerland, Kordofan giraffes are exclusively kept at Zoo Basel. Since 2011, Zoo Basel has replaced its previous Masai giraffe breeding group with Kordofan giraffes and has since been actively involved in breeding this rare subspecies. A remarkable breeding success was the birth of the female giraffe calf Tufani on September 2, 2022. Tufani weighed around 60 kilograms at birth and was the fifth offspring of the giraffe cow Sophie.
