Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi |
Real Giraffe Skull

Description
The Rothschild giraffe is one of the rarest giraffe subspecies in the world. Originally found in Uganda, Kenya, and South Sudan, it now numbers only a few hundred animals in protected areas such as Murchison Falls National Park and Lake Nakuru National Park.
At up to 5.9 meters tall, it is an imposing herbivore. Although its neck is over two meters long, like all mammals, it has only seven cervical vertebrae – each one significantly elongated. This construction not only allows it to reach high branches, but also engages in what is known as "necking," in which males engage in neck-wrestling.
There is currently only one zoo in Switzerland that keeps Rothschild giraffes: Knie's Children's Zoo in Rapperswil (Canton of St. Gallen). This zoo is actively committed to the conservation of this endangered giraffe subspecies.
