Item Description
The Rothschild's giraffe is one of the rarest giraffe subspecies in the world. Originally, it was found in Uganda, Kenya, and South Sudan. Today, only a few hundred animals live in protected areas such as Murchison Falls National Park or Lake Nakuru National Park.
With a height of up to 5.9 meters, it is an imposing herbivore. Although its neck is over two meters long, like all mammals it only has seven cervical vertebrae – each one greatly elongated. This construction not only allows it to reach high branches but also enables "necking," where males fight with their necks.
In Switzerland, there is currently only one zoo that keeps Rothschild's giraffes: Knie's Children's Zoo in Rapperswil (Canton St. Gallen). This zoo is actively involved in the conservation of this endangered giraffe subspecies.
