Item Description

Despite their neck reaching up to two meters in length, giraffes, like almost all mammals, only have seven cervical vertebrae. The difference lies in their size: each vertebra can be up to 30-40 cm long. Together, they create the characteristic long giraffe profile. These vertebrae are significantly elongated and specially connected, providing the animal with great flexibility and stability, ideal for feeding in treetops and for "necking," the typical dominance fight between bulls using their necks.

A unique feature is also the first thoracic vertebra, which functionally resembles an eighth cervical vertebra – a unique adaptation in the animal kingdom. While normal ungulates can only rotate vertebra 29 (the first thoracic vertebra) by about 20 to 30 degrees, the giraffe achieves a rotation of over 65 degrees with this vertebra. This allows it to lower its long neck into the typical drinking position and comfortably take in water. This special mobility is only possible thanks to the "eighth cervical vertebra."
