Item Description

Despite their necks being up to two meters long, giraffes, like almost all mammals, only have seven cervical vertebrae. The difference lies in their size: each vertebra can be up to 30-40 cm long. Together, they form the characteristic, long giraffe profile. These vertebrae are greatly elongated and specially connected, which gives the animal great mobility and stability, ideal for feeding in treetops and for "necking," the typical dominance fight of bulls with their necks.

Another special feature is the first thoracic vertebra, which functionally resembles an eighth cervical vertebra – a unique adaptation in the animal kingdom. While normal ungulates can only rotate vertebra 29 (the first thoracic vertebra) by about 20 to 30 degrees, the giraffe can achieve a rotation of over 65 degrees with this vertebra. This allows it to lower its long neck into the typical drinking position and comfortably drink water. This special mobility is only possible thanks to the "eighth cervical vertebra."
