Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi |
Real giraffe cervical vertebra

Description
Another special feature is the first thoracic vertebra, which is functionally similar to the eighth cervical vertebra – a unique adaptation in the animal kingdom. While normal hoofed animals can only rotate vertebra 29 (first thoracic vertebra) by about 20 to 30 degrees, the giraffe achieves a rotation of over 65 degrees with this vertebra. This allows it to lower its long neck into the typical drinking position and comfortably drink water. This special mobility is only possible thanks to the "eighth cervical vertebra."
