Real Magpie Hornbill Skull
Description
The Magpie Hornbill is a medium-sized bird in the hornbill family found in sub-Saharan Africa. It is characterized by its striking, slightly curved beak, which is bright red with a yellow base, and its contrasting plumage: the back and wings are black, while the underside is white. Its name derives from the similarity in plumage coloration to a magpie.
Magpie toucans live mainly in open savannas, open forests and bushlands. They feed mainly on insects, fruits and small vertebrates. During the breeding season they are known for their unusual behaviour: the female seals the nesting hole with mud and droppings, while the breeding partner feeds her from outside.
Their lively behavior and loud, clicking calls make them stand out in their habitat.
