Description
An elephant's molar is impressive and uniquely large. Elephants have only six molars per half of the jaw, which are replaced one after the other by changing teeth. These teeth are enormous and weigh up to 5 kilograms. They consist of hard enamel lamellae that are ideal for grinding grass, bark and other plant materials. An elephant uses each molar for several years before a new one grows in. If all teeth are lost, this can make it difficult for the animal to survive.
