The European badger is a robustly built mammal from the weasel family, widely distributed across Europe. It is characterized by its black and white facial mask, a stocky body, and powerful front paws perfectly suited for digging. Badgers live in complex underground burrows, known as "badger setts," which can be used for many generations.

As an omnivore, the badger feeds on worms, insects, fruits, roots, and occasionally small vertebrates. It is predominantly crepuscular and nocturnal and avoids contact with humans. The badger plays an important role in the ecosystem by burrowing through the soil, thus contributing to its aeration.

Despite its adaptability, the badger is threatened by road traffic and habitat loss.
