Like all rodents, chinchillas have incisors that grow throughout their lives. These so-called gnawing teeth continuously grow out of the jaw or through the skull to be ground down by constant gnawing. However, if chinchillas do not get enough hard food or suitable gnawing material, their teeth will not wear down sufficiently. This leads to dental malocclusion, excessive tooth growth, and can even affect the skull bone, posing a serious danger to the animal.
