Martes martes |
Real pine marten skull
Description
The pine marten (Martes martes) is native to Europe and is an excellent tree climber that is closely tied to the forest habitat. However, at high population densities, animals without a territory can move to less ideal areas, such as woodland islands in cultivated landscapes. This shows the flexibility of the pine marten in using different habitats.
Also striking is its powerful jaw with sharp fangs, indicating its adaptation to a carnivorous diet. The skull also has a broad forehead region and large eye sockets, which underscores its excellent senses, especially sight and hearing. These characteristics make it a skilled hunter that moves both on the ground and in the trees.
