Description
Often, as early as late winter after dusk, the eerily howling mating calls of the tawny owl male can be heard, to which the female responds with a shrill cry. Our most common owl species is by no means found only in forests; it also regularly inhabits parks in large cities. During the day, the nocturnal "little owl" usually dozes in front of its tree hollow. It is not uncommon for it to then be subjected to fierce squawking by small birds that are on its prey list.
