Oft sind schon im Spätwinter nach Einbruch der Dunkelheit die schaurig heulenden Balzrufe des Waldkauzmännchens zu hören, dem das Weibchen gellend antwortet. Unsere häufigste Eulenart ist keineswegs nur in Wäldern zu finden, auch Parkanlagen in Grossstädten bewohnt sie regelmässig. Tagsüber döst das nachtaktive «Käuzchen» meist vor seiner Baumhöhle. Nicht selten wird es dann von Kleinvögeln, die auf seiner Beuteliste stehen, mit heftigem Gezeter
