Genuine red deer stag spur-thigh pair

Red deer shed their antlers once a year, and these regrow. Yearling stags, currently in their first year of growth, are called "spikes." At this age, they typically have unbranched antlers, the characteristic spikes.

After shedding their antlers in spring, usually between early April and early May, the new antlers begin growing immediately. During this growth phase, the antlers are covered in velvet, which supplies the tissue with nutrients. Once the antlers are fully developed, the velvet dies and peels off in shreds. Deer remove these shreds by rubbing their antlers against trees and bushes – a process known as rubbing.

The antlers' color also changes as they rub against the leaves: initially light, they darken due to plant sap and resins. In the following year, their second set of antlers, the stags develop more pronounced antlers, often forked or with multiple points, depending on age, predisposition, and habitat.
