The red deer, also colloquially known as red deer and less commonly referred to as noble deer, is a species of true deer. Among the various deer species, the red deer is characterized by a particularly large and widely branched antler. This antler, which is considered a coveted hunting trophy, is only developed by male animals.
Young male deer, whose antlers do not yet show any branching, are called "Spießer". A deer with three points per antler is called a "Sechser", with four points an "Achter" and so on. A deer with at least three points on each antler has a crown and is therefore called a "Kronenhirsch" (crowned stag).
