Once a year, between early April and early May, the males shed their antlers (palms), and new ones grow. While growing, the new antlers are covered by the so-called velvet skin. Once the antlers are fully grown, the velvet skin dies and hangs down in tatters. The animals remove these tatters by rubbing their antlers against the branches of trees and bushes – this is called "feging" or "fraying". This also changes the color of the antlers. They are initially light but become darker due to the plant saps.
