Real fallow deer shovel
Description
Once a year between the beginning of April and the beginning of May, the males shed their antlers (shovels) and new ones grow. The new antlers are covered with the so-called velvet skin while they are growing. When the antlers are finished, the velvet skin dies and hangs down in shreds. The animals remove these shreds by rubbing the antlers on the branches of trees and bushes - this is called rubbing. This also changes the color of the antlers. They are light at first, but become darker due to the juices of the plants.
