Mustela putorius |
Real Badger Skull
Description
The European badger is a powerfully built mammal from the marten family that is widespread in Europe. It is characterized by its black and white facial mask, a stocky body and powerful front paws that are perfectly suited for digging. Badgers live in complex underground burrows called "badger castles" that can be used for many generations.
As an omnivore, the badger feeds on worms, insects, fruit, roots and occasionally small vertebrates. It is mainly active at dusk and at night and avoids contact with humans. The badger plays an important role in the ecosystem by digging through the soil and thus contributing to mixing.
Despite its adaptability, the badger is threatened by road traffic and habitat loss.
