This pelvis is from the skeleton of an average 5-year-old. Age was verified by the pattern of tooth eruption and the stage of development of each bone. Sex determination from skeletal material is based on skeletal changes that occur in the pelvis and skull during puberty and therefore have not yet begun in a 5-year-old. The pubic bone, ilium and ischium are still completely separate, but the ramus ischiopubicus is nearing the time of fusion (it fuses between the ages of 5 and 8).
