Description

Springboks are similar in appearance to Thomson's gazelles. Like the latter, they have a dark, reddish-brown stripe that separates the yellow-brown upper side from the white underside. On the white head, a thin stripe extends from the eyes to the upper corner of the mouth. The extended hair on the back can only be seen when the animal "shows off", i.e. jumps up with stiff legs and arched back - the behavior that gives the animal its name. Both sexes have ringed, lyre-shaped horns; those of the females are, however, slimmer.
