Cormorants are aquatic birds that live near lakes, rivers and coasts. They are known for their dense plumage, long neck and pointed beak. There are several species of cormorants in Switzerland, including the Continental European Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis). These birds are mostly black in colour and have a wingspan of up to 1.4 metres. The cormorant has a unique skull that is specially adapted to its way of life. An average cormorant skull is about 10 cm long, 4 cm wide and 5 cm high. The skull is relatively compact and robust, which gives it stability while the bird searches for prey underwater.
