Real cave bear claw
Item Description
This claw comes from a cave bear ( Ursus spelaeus ), which evolved from Denninger's bear about 500,000 years ago. The tooth, found in Styria, Austria, dates back to the Pleistocene and is a testament to this impressive species, which lived exclusively in Europe.
During its evolution, the cave bear changed from an omnivore to a herbivore. Standing upright, it reached a height of over 3.5 meters and a weight between 600 and 1200 kg. The species became extinct about 27,800 years ago, presumably due to food shortages during the long ice age periods.
