Item Description
The bronze turkey is a domesticated form of the wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) that is native to North America. It is characterized by its shimmering plumage, which shines in metallic bronze and copper tones. This splendor gives it its name. The bronze turkey was originally bred for both its attractive appearance and its meat. These turkeys are hardy animals and prefer open areas where they can forage for seeds, berries and insects.
The eggs of the Bronze Turkey are oval, cream-colored and often covered with small brown spots. A clutch usually contains 8-15 eggs, which are laid by the hen in a hollow in the ground and incubated for about 25-28 days. The chicks are precocial and can walk and search for food shortly after hatching. The coloring of the eggs is a natural camouflage and protects them from predators in the wild.
