The white-tailed deer is native to North America and is the most widespread deer species on the continent. It inhabits various habitats, including forests, fields, and even suburban areas. These medium-sized ungulates wear a reddish-brown coat in summer, which turns grayish-brown in winter. A characteristic feature is their white tail, which they raise and wag when alarmed or excited. The males, called bucks, possess antlers that they shed and regrow each year. It is striking that, unlike the antlers of our deer species, their antlers grow forward and show a forward-facing curvature.
