The red deer, colloquially also called red deer and more rarely referred to as noble deer, is a species of true deer. Among the various deer species, the red deer is characterized by a particularly large and widely branched antler. This antler, which is considered a coveted hunting trophy, is developed only by male animals.
Young male deer whose antlers do not yet have branches are called "Spießer" (spike bucks). A deer with three points per antler beam is called a six-pointer, with four points an eight-pointer, and so on. A deer with at least three points at the top has a crown and is therefore called a crown deer.
