Actinomycosis, also known as radiation fungus, is a rare, chronic infection caused by bacteria of the genus Actinomyces , which belong to the family Actinomycetaceae, order Actinomycetales, and class Actinobacteria. The disease often occurs in the face, neck, or abdomen and is characterized by purulent abscesses, tissue destruction, and fistula formation.

The infection usually occurs due to dental injuries, surgeries, or other injuries to the mucous membranes, which allow bacteria to penetrate deeper tissue layers. Because it's a mixed infection, other bacteria are often involved, which promotes the spread of the disease.

Treatment typically involves high-dose antibiotics over a long period of time. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to remove affected tissue. Despite its rarity, actinomycosis is a serious disease that is highly treatable if diagnosed early.

Actinomycosis can be very painful. The infection leads to purulent abscesses and tissue destruction, which can be associated with severe pain. This can cause swelling, pressure, and difficulty swallowing, particularly in the face and neck area. The disease also often causes chronic abdominal pain if organs are affected.

Because the infection spreads slowly and is often detected late, fistulas (pathological channels in the tissue) can form, causing additional discomfort. Without treatment, the disease can progress and lead to serious complications. However, with early treatment – usually long-term antibiotic treatment – the pain can be alleviated and the infection cured.
